Orangeville – Oakville Rangers had another “Do Or Die” game to play on Saturday night. They picked up where they left it in game #4: strong physical game, good skating and puck movement. They also opened the score early when Alex picked up a rebound after Lucas’ hard point shot.
For the first time in the series – the Rangers actually looked to be a better team as they kept the Flyers off the limits and dictated a tempo of the game. They continued to generate good scoring opportunities (Luke’s point blank shot, Matt’s point shot to the post or Jake’s blast off the goalie’s mask, Ben’s unfinished deke). However the Flyers tied the game in the second on their strongest shift out and the game went to the third period tied 1-1.
Nothing really looked like the game wouldn’t be under a control until the Flyers capitalized on fatal errors in Oakville’s zone. Having 2-goal lead (3-1) they added an empty netter to insure their ticket to OMHA finals.
The Rangers paid the price for their lackluster effort in the first 2 or 3 games of the series and later inability to put the puck to the net. They scored only 7 goals in five games.
Despite the loss: it was arguably the best season the Rangers had in the last 3 years reaching OMHA semifinal. Winning Peterborough tournament and playing final in Silver Stick qualifier are amongst their top achievements. And yes – eliminating their archrival Ancaster Avalanche in OMHA QF series counts, too!
Game Notes: the Rangers shortened OMHA season will continue with a few practices and a couple of exhibition games. Mississauga Terriers will be in town on Tuesday night.
Congratulations to ‘AAA’ team for their trip to OMHA finals this season after winning their qualifier in Owen Sound over the last weekend!
Go Rangers Go!!!
