Rangers go 4-0-1 to win SCTA Finalist title and move on to
OMHA Championship in Georgina this weekend.
The first game of the tournament was against the Brampton
Battalion, which saw the Rangers weather a 5 minute penalty very early in the
first. Once they killed that one off the
Rangers were able to net 3 unanswered goals to win 3-0.
Later that day at 5:30 PM the Rangers took on the Guelph
Storm. The Rangers went up 1-0 late in
the first. The Storm took a late period
penalty that allowed the Rangers to start the second off with a power play, which they
converted 22 seconds into the second.
The Storm managed a late third period goal, but were unable to tie the
game. The game finished 2-1.
A special "thank you" goes to Lucas Marek for coming out
Friday as the team’s spare goalie.
Saturday morning the Rangers skated against a much improved
Niagara Falls Canuck team. The Rangers
opened the scoring with a power-play goal 5 minutes into the first period. Near the end of the second the Rangers
extended their lead to 2-0. With only
4:19 left to play the Canucks netted a goal to bring them to within one. With the Canuck goalie pulled for the extra
attacker they pressed the Rangers for the equalizer, however a diving
poke-check by Daniel at center ice pushed the puck far enough for that all
important insurance marker. The Rangers
won that game 3-1.
Later that day the Rangers hosted the Halton Hurricanes and
again started off the game with a goal midway through the first period. Halton was able to net the equalizer on the
man-advantage. The Rangers were able to get the go ahead goal only to take a
late minute penalty in the third and have Halton tie the game, which finished
2-2.
The three wins and a tie was good enough to place Oakville
first in their loop and set up the deciding game against the Welland Tigers on
Sunday to see who would advance to the OMHA Championship weekend.
With only 14 seconds off the clock the Rangers burst out of
the gate to score the first goal. The
Rangers have scored the first goal in all of the games this weekend, which is
key to their style of play. Midway
through the first Welland
was able to get the equalizer. At the
10:20 mark of the second Antoine saw a complete open Colin at the left side of
the net, a quick pass and the Rangers were up 2-1. This play was set-up by a bone-crushing check
by Colin along the boards that sent the puck back into the Welland zone to Antoine, leaving the Tiger
player in heap which allowed Colin free access to the net for the easy tap-in. With just under 2 minutes to play the Rangers
were rewarded with a goal for an aggressive fore-check. The Rangers went into the dressing room
between the second and third up by two.
The Tigers tried their best to net two goals in the third but the
“shut-down” D of the Rangers allowed only one goal insuring a spot in the OMHA
Championship weekend.
GO RANGERS!!
